DESCRIPTION:
The Official 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Pin
CONCEPT:
I am truly indebted to Mayor Rocky Anderson for believing in me to design the official 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games Host City pin. This pin was the official pin for Salt Lake and one of two pins I created for Mayor Anderson. The concept was very complex while trying to integrate two very distinct cultural icons into one piece of art that touches everyone who views and studies it. First, Mayor Anderson wanted emphasis on the togetherness of all cultures "Strength through Diversity" concept. I used colors to depict the different cultures. Of course, I added my colors, turquiose, which represents strength in the Navajo culture.
I also tried a different presentation of the City and County Building using black against a turquiose skies, I assumed thats how the City and County Building would look at night during the Olympics.
I also added the Eagle on the outside band to Honor the Native American culture, America and flight for progression.
It was truly an honor to see people from all over the world wearing these pins during the Olympics and knowing that these pins have been taken into the Four Sacred Directions is very special to me.
Thank you, Mayor Anderson
